Vault is going to do a lot to optimize for secrets management, things like rotating secrets based on time. Some people believe that you should just have low level key value pairs at the very lowest level and then it's up to tools like puppet to put those values in a tin plate. I wrote a tool called compd designed around these principles. That comp d can say, is the data in volt, is theData in t c d. Actually, you can mix a match.
