The ban affected several loyalists and republican organizations. Sinn Fein the political wing of the Irish Republican army or the IRA was the main target. Broadcasters like the BBC were forced to interpret the new law themselves. They compiled a list of actors who could be called upon to re-voice the words for TV or radio. Instead of hearing voices of IRA commander turned politician Martin McGinnis or Sinn Fein's Gerry Adams the audience would hear someone like Paul reading their words.
