Ashby presents it as a binary system, but he talks also about comparing degrees of brightness to do the sort. And it seems to be more like an analog kind of thing. He assumes that the old Dix letters could be distinguished by their level of brightness rather than their shape. The reality is certainly analog, but we only have the ability to discriminate so many steps.
