The Higgs Boson: A New Kind of Boson

The Higgs boson behaves differently than other particles in the standard model. It carries with it kind of an energy field that extends across all space. As other particles travel through that field, they interact with it in a way that makes those particles behave as if they had a mass. By adding this sticky new Higgs field to our theories, we can explain how these particles have mass.
