What Is Conservatism?
In the impeachment trial of Hastings, Burke was obviously against the abuses in the colonies by the East India Company. But a major part of his argument wasn't the assault on the dignity of the Indians or the Bengalis but on what it was doing to the character of the English rulers there. And an argument that then kind of percolates with Berg, and by the end of the 1780s and into the 90s, it's very, very important for him. It has a lot to do with how he thinks about the problems with the way that Britain was governing India.
