Is the Debt Ceiling a Good Thing?
MMT economists would suggest that the controlling mechanism is actually inflation. And if inflation gets out of control that can also unravel economies. I think there's very little economic rationale for a debt ceiling, but there could be a lot of political rationale for it. But you end up reaching these showdowns all the time, but that a mechanism for keeping government honest in terms of what it is, it's probably a good thing.
