Having a Penicillin Allergy Leads to Less Effective Choices

In late 2013, we noted that a penicillin allergy history, though often inaccurate, was not a benign finding at hospital admission. We looked at about 50,000 Kaiser Permanente Southern California members who were hospitalized in age, morbidity and gender match them to a two-to-one ratio. And found that subjects with a peniillin allergy history spent significantly more time in the hospital than non-allergic patients. They also had significantly more exposure to antibiotics associated with C difficillin VRE as well as febronutropenia. Despite having this peniminil allergy history, cephalosporins were still among the most commonly used antibiotic class
