Even by federal estimates, two thirds of the so called whiskey currently sold in city drink establishments was denatured alcohol. 12 people had died in one month from a rum purchased in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn. The mixture sold from the back room of a corner store for 50 cents a pint was undiluted wood alcohol.
