The Apostles Are Seeing With New Eyes, and Sometimes Scripture Opens Up Possibilities
The gospel narratives agree that before the Lord's resurrection, the disciples didn't comprehend this doctrine. I think sometimes Scripture opens up possibilities, and then when we see the prophecy fulfilled, we see it with new eyes. Many Latter-day Saints can probably empathize with this position if you've ever had difficult conversation about your faith but are not Christian yet.
