The Importance of Timelessness
If to be dead is to exist outside of earthly time, then this tough-minded, energetic living in the present is also the life of the dead. What do the dead give us? A grip on the present instant, in which we're now relentlessly inserted. To tell someone with a dead child, you really should move on. It is doubly thoughtless, because there's no medium left through which to move anywhere. The person who says, I keep expecting to hear his key in the door at any moment isn't merely falling back on a well-worn trope. She's issuing a factual report.
