The Death of Thomas Weems

Thomas Weems was found guilty of murdering his wife Marianne in 1815. He told the court how he had pressed her with his thumbs until she died. The jury left for minutes before returning with a guilty verdict. As a final insult, saved for only the most heinous criminals, his body was ordered to be delivered to the surgeons for dissection. Dr Oakes carried out seven experiments devised and one hour to carry them out. At 1.25pm, on that August afternoon, Weems' body presented to him the perfect opportunity to teach to a packed hall. His body was then hanged from the gate at Cambridge Medical College.
