The Devastating Impact of the Kansas-Nebraska Act on Native Lives

In 1854, some Democratic senators including Stephen Douglas and President Pierce wanted to bring the territories of Kansas and Nebraska into the Union as states. Southerners blocked this because both states were north of 3630 and they did not want to disrupt the balance of anti-slave and pro-slave states in the Senate. The Kansas-Nebraska Act ends up repealing the Missouri Compromise. It was thought that it would be sort of the end of it but it ended up instead leading to the creation of the abolitionist Republican Party. That's going to be a theme with all of these things.
