The first sick patients started arriving in Wuhan hospitals a little into December 2019. The scientific consensus is that the virus ultimately came from bats, though no good ancestral match has yet been identified. That leaves open the worry that further bat coronaviruses might follow SARS-CoV-2. A study of the viruses infecting bats in southern China amplifies that concern as well as reinforcing the idea that COVID did have a natural origin.
