The Obama campaign believed, I think correctly, that the right way to get more people involved was to ask them to take control of their neighbors. The wildly controversial decision to forgo the campaign finance system and allow individual checks of $23 average was, you know, the reason why we had $900 million instead of $85 million. And then just the absolute insistence from the very first day of Barack Obama to his campaign, it was all going to be about the volunteers. It wasn't just talking, it was a mindset that as a Senate campaign guy, I didn't understand when I first got there.
