The Risks of Using Carbon Fiber Composite in Spacecraft
The hole was made of carbon fiber composite the type of material used in spacecraft. We always understood that this was the wrong material for submersible holes because with each pressure cycle you can have progressive damage. The Coast Guard will be pursuing their investigative arm and in cases where there's indications that a vessel may have been operated as manifestly unsafe than the Coast Guard does investigate, says former U.S. Coast Guard captain Peter Boyne.
