Palliative Care Helps People Who Are Dying
The default pathway for those who die within health care institutions uses life-sustaining technology to postpone death as long as possible. By trapping patients in a technologically driven institutional matrix that imposes undue suffering and isolates patients from their communities, the default pathway poses formidable barriers to patients dying well. The typical strategy to address this problem has been to expand and to enhance palliative care and hospice. For patients like LC, a palliative approach to their remaining health care now poses a strong rival to what I described as this default pathway.
