Is There a Predictive Value for a Positive BAL Culture for Pneumonia?

In uninfected lungs, macrophages are really the predominant cell that's found. hallmark of pneumonia is an alveolar neutrophilia. If you have a PMN percentage of greater than 50% on a BAL cell count and diff, that's not terribly specific. It doesn't necessarily tell you whether someone has pneumonia.
