In Our Time

CHAPTER

The Footprint in the Sun

The Great Shipwrecked is about a man on an island who finds his own body in the sand. The imprint of that foot makes him think about his own body, and the potential presence of someone else's body. He becomes extraordinarily upset and beside himself for a very long time. And he only really recovers that kind of self-sufficiency that he had before by reconverting his island into a fortress.
