Horne uses the phrase founding fathers without scarequotes. He speaks of them as a kind of unified, or even uniform, group with a straightforward shared agenda which centered on slavery in particular. There are many sweep generalizations, an assumption of unity of views and agenda. And it is, again, invoking this idea of the founding fathers.
