CHAPTER

The Rise and Fall of Jiang Kai-Shak

In early 1950, after Li Zongren made it clear he wasn't going to be returning from sick leave in the United States where he was receiving medical treatment, Jiang decided to resume being president of the ROC. And then, all of a sudden, in May, 1950, Kim Il-Song started getting ready to invade South Korea. On June 27th, Truman ordered the seventh fleet to start heading to the Taiwan Strait in order to prevent Mao from attempting to cross the Taiwan Strait and carry out a regime change. This was quite a reversal from what Truman had said in January 1950 about not getting involved in any civil war between the KMT and the CCP.
