Yellow Wolf and the Nez Perse
Carpenters encountered a band of nez purse led by yellow wolf as they entered the park to flee the us Army. Carpenter's brother in law, george cowan, angered the native americans by refusing them food. According to the carpenters, they tried to avoid confrontation by writing away but were intercepted further down the trail by another group of native americans on horseback. The nex purse feared the carpenter would alert the army to their presence, so they took theCarpenters captive and led them back to the larger tribe,. attempting to cross montana for escape into Canada.
