Hypnosis and the Cult Dynamic
A big part of hypnosis and cult stuff in ritual is creating the set and setting around the person so that they want to believe. They do at least probably usually more than half of the work of putting themselves there because they're trying to follow along. It's kind of like Masonic or you know the degree system of something like the Golden Dawn especially in the time when you couldn't google all the secrets and buy them at a bookstore.
