The Contagiousness of Puperal Fever
In the early 19th century, many physicians started to maybe consider that puperal fever might be a contagious disease. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., an American physician, but probably better known as a poet, set out to compile all of the evidence in such a way that it could not be denied. He recommended that physicians should not perform autopsies prior to delivery and that if they had to do so, they should change their clothes and wait 24 hours before treating a patient. And yeah, he died at 47 of tuberculosis.
