The first formally constituted city wide police force expected to perform all of those law forcement functions that i named before and really carry out the sort of direct, hard work of law enforcement on the street in a city was created in london by the metropolitan police act. And why charleston? Charleston was a large town. It was prosperous, but it was not the big in america, not by long shot. While this charleston watch and guard was aimed primarily at monitoring the slaves in the town. So we were no longer talking about just a few dozen guides with clubs or pistols protecting a dockyard. Were now talking about a big enough force to actually patrol the whole town.
