Why Western Red Cedar Isn't Getting the Moisture That They Need
Climate change that increases heat and decreases precipitation beyond the average is what's damaging these trees. One correlation we found was a correlation between the dieback of Western Red Cedar areas and low precipitation in the form of snowpack in spring. And so they're just a little bit less suited to deal when we have a lower precipitation. They can get a little deeper, but they don't go as deep as a lot of other species.
