The Difference Between Popularity and Status

Humans have two great drives. One of them is status, which is what I've written my book about. The other one is connection and we want to feel like we belong. We evolved in the context of mobile hunter gatherer bands - that was the original status game. Around 10,000 years ago, we discovered agriculture; now there's this kind of formal 'crown' on our heads.
