In the fifties, door bell companies pivoted to manufacturing military equipment. New tone and rittenhouse had to learn more about electronics. They realized that you could make reasonably pleasant electric sounds without actually using those long, cumbersome bells. You can picture it as sort of a flat wind chime up against the wall.
