Counter-therapy emerged in the 1950s out of social psychological research into group dynamics. In 1947, General Dwight Eisenhower made a point to emphasize the need for creative thinking in the military. This is basically a tacit acknowledgement that the Cold War had already begun and that the American military needed to focus on how it could win.
