Carbon and Water as the Basic Ingredients for Life

Carbon and liquid water are the basic ingredients for life. But it's possible that life could exist based on different elements and compounds. Perhaps the second best like chemical to build bio chemistry on might have been silicon. People talk about alternatives to liquid water as a solvent for life too. These include methane and hydrogen sulfide, but again they're not as optimal with complexities of life as carbon is.
