When i worked in romania for almost two years, and when you start reading about the roll of the securitate during the communist regime, they were living in a world where they suspected every one, including their loved ones, of being involved in conspiracies. And my understanding is that doesn't make you less suspicious. It makes every action look suspicious or feel suspicious in that kind of environment. Even perfectly ordinary things can suddenly look suspicious when you're worried that people are watching everything you do.
