The Hidden Layers of a Deep Neural Network

The goal of a deep neural network is to provide a learning mechanism that mimics the human brain. So for the purposes of an overly simple thought experiment, imagine you've got a black box. And let's say that you are putting in one thing and it transforms in some way inside the box and comes out as something else. This is sort of similar to how computer scientists perform supervised learning with artificial neural networks.
