Ancient Greek Orientalism

Hermes is an ancient sage, one who features centrally in the alchemical and magical traditions. Like Zoroaster, we see all manner of amazing stories and doctrines and teachings associated with the figure of Hermes. In later antiquity we sometimes see the Jews adopted into the Wise Barbarian Hall of Fame by Greco-Roman authors. It's not surprising that Phylo of Alexandria should reimagine Moses as an esoteric philosopher sage.
