In 1913 the Austro-Hungarian High Command discovered that one of their recently resigned heads of military intelligence named Alfred Ratal had been receiving cash payments from government. They were able to determine that in return for these payments Ratal was providing them with false information about Russia's strengths. Initially they tried to keep it secret rather than imprisoning him, but after a few more months the word got out and he attempted to kill himself before being imprisoned. So who was Franz Ferdinand?
