The way that science keeps chugging along as if a boat beating on against the current is by proving itself as somehow useful. The ultimate test is usually supplied by use in one way or another, whether that be enjoyment or health and technological progress. So for instance, for a Christian to choose amongst doctrines is a kind of exercise in futility, because either God speaks truly or he doesn't. In Aristotle's estimation, science differs from doubt, differs from opinion, differs from suspicion.
