The British History Podcast

CHAPTER

Did the Nobles Surrender?

William didn't seem to care all that much about whether or not some one surrendered, with the single notable exception of queen edith. Florence of worcester writes te, although he concluded a treaty with him, he still allowed his troops to burn and pillage the villes. It appears that the upper classes of england were rushing to aid the duke in his war so that they could rebrand themselves as collaborators. The records indicate that the main concern for the elite was land and titles. And the english clergy in particular were focused on these temporal concerns, and they sought to ally themselves with whoever appeared best situated to guarantee their holdings and positions.
