In the day of a movable type printing press, Ella Gutenberg, it was possible for a craftsman and some of his business partners to create their own printing press. But as that technology developed and became more complicated it became more and more capital intensive. It became less and less accessible by the average person. At a certain point, you needed to be extremely wealthy in order to own a press that had any actual reach or ability to spread information far and wide. The corporatization of the media in the 20th century around the electronic media is what we saw with television.
