Back in Fujian, desperate people do what they can to survive. Some coastal refugees teamed up with criminals and attacked villages. They would often be sold as wives or worse. There was a Qing policy, which kind of backfired from sailors from the Jung Empire. And if the semen surrendered to the Qing, they could keep their ranks. So normally when your side is losing, if you decide to defect or desert, your life is at risk. But with this amnesty offer, you surrender to the Qing,. You get a new job, or at least we're on the payroll, you get some sort of income.
