I don't think anybody in the United States much reads neoclassical French poetry, which is very great. Baudelaire gave modern poets the mechanisms by which they could take the troubling aspects of their daily life. And what he's doing is he's giving you an experience, which is troubling, but is mesmerizing through the power of the traditional poetry and the appalling nature of the new subject matter. He's not giving you an answer. If we resist destiny, it drags us behind us. But if we follow it, it guides us. I think that's the wisdom of Catholicism.
