The spike in depression starting around 2012 among teens is not just because of the technology. It's also in social media use from optional to mandatory, but they also started spending less time with their friends face to face and less time sleeping. The whole idea behind Facebook was, you know, you could have instant friends anytime and this should be a great social glue. And it just doesn't work the same way.

The United States is currently home to six generations of people. Twenge, PhD, a professor of psychology at San Diego State University, is the author of more than a hundred scientific publications and several books based on her research, including Generations, iGen, and Generation Me. She has also been featured on Today, Good Morning America, Fox and Friends, CBS This Morning, and NPR. She lives in San Diego with her husband and three daughters.
