By 1887 he had led over a hundred missionaries into China and it continued to grow. He became deeply respected by the Chinese people there but he gave up a lot in the process. Out of the eight children that he had four of them didn't make it past the age of ten and out of the four that did survive one of his daughters did end up dying and leaving behind four children herself.
