Macy's came to me and said, we want to interview you for the eventual CEO role of Macy's. I just was holy mackerel. Should I at least consider this? And so I called my friend, Allen Questram. It took six months, but he convinced me to come back. We bought Macy's in December of 1994; it wasn't a welcome bid.
