Why It's Hard to Think About History
We want to be free from the dirt and grime of historical flux and change. We want timeless, abstract reason. And so what we find is that in every society, human knowledge, reflection, religion and philosophy always move toward amless - a historical, abstract categories of thought. So since god is the author of history and is making things new all the time, it's difficult for us to think about it because we're not in control of it. The pauline epistles are the one of the bible that has received the most attention over the last two thousand years.
