Secessionism in the South

In december 18 60, 169 delegates met in charleston and voted to secede from the union. The convention made the reason for secession clear: They were leaving the union to protect slavery. Secessionists insisted that state's rights trumped national sovereignty. Lincoln would not be inaugurated until march of 18 61. And as much as buchanan believed that secession was illegal, he also believed that the federal government lacked constitutional power to stop the states from leaving.
