There's a reason there are specific rules in the contract language about raises and what you can and can't do with the contract. And those straight jackets exist to prevent shenangans on future deals and abusing bird rights. The league learned from early in the salary cap era, when these guard rails did not exist, that teams were very creative of some of the better Teams came up with ways to short money and then immediately give them longer deals.
