The Infield Fly Rule
Under the modern rule, the umpire would have called this an infield fly putting the batter out automatically. This rule was not yet imagined. Burrows by intentionally muffing the ball forces the runners off their bases, but with such a late start that he is able to turn a double play. It appears to have been legal during a period from about 18 59,. when tagging up became a thing and until maybe the mid 18 seventies or so.
