Is There a Realist Element in the Hairstyles?
There's pubic hair in some of these images too. I wonder if the fantastical or dreamlike quality of these images means that fusily can be realist about women, as well as romantic. The realist element is, of course, his wife, who you mentioned, Sophia Rawlins, who often sat for him. But these are not a luxurious portrait. She's not a passive participant in the composition of the images either. It's more than just his fantasy, it seems to me.
