Marcus the Cineus Crassus wasn't a great military leader, but he was one of those politicians who were behind the scenes. He owned most of Rome at one point, buying and selling favors, houses, land, mines. The Romans didn't really have banking in the same way as we do today. And that is why we call him a tycoon - because he had far more power than anybody else did.
