Dostoyevsky wrote about a man in poverty, beaten down by the world. He fell in love with a woman in similar circumstances only to have a mean, rich guy bargein and claim her for himself. So you've got the socio economic critique, if you want it. And people like that at the time. Although personally, i wonder how much dostoyevky himself really intended that.
