Thomas Jefferson and Mary Wether Lewis
Thomas Jefferson and others persuaded Congress in 1804 to fund an expedition to explore this newly acquired territory all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Mary Wether Lewis asked Jefferson if he could include the assistance of his former Army Captain William Clark to be leaders in this discovery. In the months leading up to this expedition, which ended up lasting three years, Jefferson extensively taught Lewis the sciences of mapping botany, natural history, mineralogy, astronomy and navigation. And from some journal entries, it appears that Lewis was heavily trying to recruit William Clark to join the masons while this expedition was still preparing to get underway at Camp River de Bois in the winter of 1803.
