Introduction
In 1976, Martin Scorsese wanted to make an old-fashioned Hollywood musical. He cast Liza Vanelli as a nightclub singer and Robert De Niro as the man she loves and loses. The songs are very much performance songs rather than story songs. They don't comment on the action so much as demonstrate what she does for a living.
